On Friday October 18, 2019, at approximately 12:46 pm, EPSO Dispatch received a call for service reference someone siphoning gas from a truck in the parking lot of the Safeway store at McLaughlin Road in Falcon. The reporting party knew the suspects. These individuals were also known to responding deputies and are suspects in other crimes throughout El Paso County and Colorado Springs.
On October 10, 2019, the Sheriff's Office Rural Enforcement Outreach Team with the assistance from Metro Vice Narcotics Intelligence Unit (Metro VNI) conducted knock and talks on several properties of interest in rural eastern El Paso County.
A suspect was contacted in the 3800 block of Sengbeil Road and allowed an inspection of the greenhouses. The suspect had invalid paperwork and alleged that the marijuana was for the sole consumption of a family member.
On September 21, 2019, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Scott Brettell, Chad Wheat, Peter Gaffney (RET), and Lieutenant Eric Carnell were having lunch at a hunting location in Colorado. Deputy Brettell received information of a hunter, Mr. Mason Young from Arkansas, who accidentally injured himself with a knife and it was believed his femoral artery was cut. Together the team of deputies assembled a rescue team of themselves and two medically trained spouses.
On September 18, 2019 the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into a shooting that occurred at the Maverick Convenience Store located at 2477 Peterson Road.
Investigative efforts have led to the arrest of one of two suspects. The first suspect Nicholas Haiden Daniels DOB 05/08/99 is in custody at the El Paso County Jail on the charges of Second-Degree Kidnapping, First-Degree Assault, and Aggravated Robbery.
Due to the continued dry conditions and the National Weather Service forecast for continued dry and warmer than normal weather resulting in very high to extreme fire danger ratings, Sheriff Bill Elder has ordered Stage I Fire Restrictions for all of the unincorporated areas of El Paso County. Sheriff’s Office Seeks the Community’s Assistance Identifying Suspects Involved in Motor Vehicle Theft / Fraud Case
On August 16, 2019, deputies responded to a report of a motor vehicle theft that occurred overnight in the 10,100 block of Everglades Dr. At approximately 12:20 PM, the victim was notified by their bank of several fraudulent charges on their credit cards, which were stolen along with the vehicle.
On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at approximately 9:27 PM, Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired in the 1900 block of Shawnee Drive. When deputies arrived on scene, they located a deceased male lying on the sidewalk. Detectives were notified and responded to interview witnesses and process the scene.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Division of Wildland Fire Management began a fire apparatus Type 6 Brush Engine Replacement plan in August of 2018. The aging fleet of our brush engines were 12 years old and in need of constant servicing and repair. These Type 6 brush engines are the mainstay of our fire suppression fleet.
On Thursday, September 5, 2019, Nathaniel Hardage, DOB: 12/02/80, was arrested for felony theft relating to contractor fraud. He was taken into custody without incident when he arrived at the El Paso County Courthouse to appear on other cases related to contractor fraud and felony assault. Hardage is the owner of Aspen Peaks Roofing & Contractors LLC. This is the third time the Sheriff's Office has arrested Hardage in 2019 regarding this type of criminal activity.
The Sheriff’s Office extended the deadline for applications to the Fall Citizens’ Academy to no later than 5:00 PM on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. There is no charge to attend the Citizens’ Academy; however, seating is limited to the first forty completed applications received.
On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will partner with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and law enforcement agencies nationwide for the “Saturation Saturday” campaign. The community can expect to see highly visible and proactive traffic enforcement starting Saturday through September 3, for the Labor Day Holiday. Many of our patrol vehicles will be outfitted with a “red ribbon” in honor of victims and survivors of impaired driving.

On August 15, 2019, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office concluded its investigation into the Officer Involved Shooting concerning De'Von Bailey and turned its findings over to the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's Office for review.
On Monday, August 12, 2019, at approximately 8:41 PM, deputies were dispatched to a report of a robbery at the
Walmart, located at 11550 Meridian Market View. Upon arrival, they learned that three male suspects assaulted an employee while stealing 23 iPhones valued at approximately $23,000.
Sheriff's Office Provides Investigative Update into Officer Involved Shooting
On Saturday, August 3, 2019 , the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office assumed the investigation into an officer involved shooting by the Colorado Springs Police Department. In accordance with Senate Bill 15-219, the Sheriff’s Office operates as an independent investigative agency to provide a fair and impartial examination of the facts as it relates to Peace Officer Involved Incidents.

The Fall Citizens’ Academy will begin on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and will be held on Tuesday evenings, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Academy will be conducted over a seven-week period, culminating in a graduation ceremony on October 29, 2019
On Tuesday, August 6, 2019, neighborhoods throughout El Paso County are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. The event’s recurring theme is: “Give neighborhood crime and drugs a going away party.”
On Saturday, August 3, 2019, at approximately 6:45 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to a report of a personal robbery in the 2400 block of East Fountain Blvd. Upon arrival, officers interviewed the victim who identified two suspects. Officers contacted the suspects and during the encounter, one suspect reached for a firearm. At least one officer fired a shot at the suspect.
On July 31, 2019 at approximately 4:28 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of Shining Star Drive in reference to a domestic disturbance. When deputies arrived on scene, they found a deceased male.
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Daniel Hunt. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Hunt.
On July 31, 2019, at approximately 8:00 AM, law enforcement executed search warrants on two properties in the 20000 block of Deputy Point and a knock and talk on a third property regarding illegal marijuana cultivation. There were approximately 300 marijuana plants, four firearms and nine emaciated and neglected dogs seized from the three properties. The Humane Society took possession of all animals.

Daniel Gray, DOB: 06/12/79 was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on the charge of 2nd Degree Murder.
On July 27, 2019, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call regarding a burglary at Potestio Brothers Equipment, located at 7380 Space Village Avenue. When deputies arrived on scene, they learned employees of the business noticed a lock for one of the gates on the property had been cut, and the gate was open.
A year ago, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), UCHealth and El Paso County Public Health to launch a five-year grant funded Behavioral Health Connect Program, also known as BHCON. The program paired an El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy with a Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician from UCHealth to provide a coordinated response to mental health related calls for service in El Paso County.
On Thursday, July 25, 2019, at approximately 9:45 PM, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a gray Nissan truck, near the intersection of Main Street and Hancock Expressway. The driver failed to yield and accelerated at a high rate of speed. The deputy did not pursue the vehicle. A short time late, the vehicle was found abandoned and unoccupied on Cresta Loma Circle.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at approximately 5:48 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious male walking with a gun in the 2200 block of Monterey Road. As officers contacted the male party, he got into a vehicle and fled the scene. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.
