Evidence Unit

Evidence Unit

General Information

The four-person Evidence Unit receives, stores, and maintains all of the evidence taken into custody by the Sheriff's Office. Additionally, this section handles found property, impounded vehicles, and pieces of property held for safekeeping. Arrangements for the return of property are completed by appointment.

The Evidence Unit destroys a considerable amount of items each year. This is due to many reasons, but in each case the item has been approved for release or destruction by policy or order of the District Attorney.  Some examples of reasons for destruction include: The item was destroyed (typically weapons) as part of a plea agreement; The item contains bodily fluids and potential biohazards rendering them unsafe to retain or release; statute of limitations no longer governs the keeping of evidence; Illegal weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia.
