Arrest Made in Overnight Pursuit

December 5, 2018 - 5:00pm

On December 5, 2018, at approximately 2:15 AM, a deputy working in the area of Peterson Road and Panamint Court observed a pickup truck driving around the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel and the Econo Lodge parking lots. The deputy noticed various equipment violations and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Suspect Apprehended in Early Morning Burglary After Eluding Law Enforcement

On Friday, November 30, 2018, at approximately 6:18 AM, Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence in the 2800 Block of S. Circle Drive.   The suspect, Joshua Johnson, DOB: 12/10/89, left the scene in a red Nissan truck as deputies arrived.  Deputies attempted to contact the suspect as he was leaving but he fled the area.

Sheriff’s Office Seeks the Community’s Assistance in Identifying Burglary/Fraud Suspects

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of a Burglary that occurred in the 500 block of Holly Drive, in unincorporated El Paso County. In the overnight hours between October 11-12, 2018, the suspects entered the victim’s residence through an unsecured window and stole a Smith and Wesson .380 Pistol, computer, iPod and wallet containing, credit/debit cards and personal identifying information.  

Suspect Arrested for Two Counts of Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer

On November 28, 2018, at approximately 3:06 AM, deputies observed a vehicle driving erratically and weaving.  Deputies believed the subject could be under the influence and a traffic stop was initiated in the area of South Academy Boulevard and Bradley Road, resulting in a pursuit.

The suspect vehicle then turned into oncoming traffic and swerved towards two deputies.  Both deputies were able to avoid the suspect’s attempts to ram them at a high rate of speed. 

Sheriff's Office Reminds the Community to Be Aware of Phone Scams

The Sheriff's Office has received a report of another phone scam. The caller is advising victims that they have an outstanding warrant.   They direct the victim to pay the fine at the Office of the Sheriff located at 27 E Vermio Avenue.  In these most recent cases, they are using the name of an actual employee, Commander David, of the Sheriff’s Office.

Wildland Fire Management Team and Agency Partners to Conduct Pile Burning in Northern El Paso County

On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, the El Paso County Wildland Fire Management Team in conjunction with El Paso County Parks and Regional Fire Departments will be conducting pile burning in the northern end of the County.  The team will focus their efforts in the Black Forest and Fox Run Regional Park areas. 

Barricaded Suspect Taken into Custody Without Incident

On November 20, 2018, at approximately 8:30 AM, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call regarding a fight between a male and female outside a residence in the 14100 block of Albatross Drive.  When deputies arrived on scene a female was observed to have an injured and bleeding hand.  The female stated the male was barricaded inside the residence with their two-year old child.

Arrest Made in Early Morning Shooting

On November 16, 2018, at approximately 4:14 AM, the Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a shooting victim that was transported to a local hospital.  The victim stated he was shot by a suspect identified as Albert Leckenby, DOB: 081871 during a verbal argument in the area of I-25, near the Ray Nixon Power Plant.

Two Arrests Made in Hwy 94 Homicide

'On Sunday, July 22, 2018, at approximately 6:45 AM, the Sheriff's Office received a call of a shooting. Deputies responded to a local hospital where they learned a victim was shot and another was deceased in the 12,000 block of Highway 94.

Deputies responded to the address on Highway 94 and discovered a deceased male. The victim was identified as 47-year-old Gustavo Del Sol Sanchez.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Hosting Reserve Unit Open House

Update - Horses Seized in Animal Cruelty Investigation

On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at approximately 9:45 AM, deputies with the Rural Enforcement & Outreach Unit (REO) executed a search warrant at an address in the 3400 Block Meridian Rd, as part of a continued animal cruelty investigation.   The Humane Society of the Pike’s Peak Region (HSPPR)was on scene to provide assistance. 

Skeletal Remains Recovered in Rock Bed Identified

On November 3, 2018, at approximately 9:14 AM, deputies were dispatched to the 4600 Blk of S. Academy Blvd in reference to a Suspicious Incident.

Upon arriving on scene, deputies located skeletal remains in a rock bed.  A cell phone, gym bag, and a hoodie jacket were located in proximity to the remains. 

The victim has been identified as James L. Suggs, DOB: 05/11/63.  At this time, there is no indication of trauma or foul play.

California Abducted Children Found Safe and Unharmed, Mother Arrested

On Sunday, November 4, 2018, an Amber Alert was issued for 11-year-old Priscilla Penaloza and 1-year-old Alexander Penaloza, who police say was taken by their mother, Diana Moreira, during a supervised visit in San Jose, California.  They were reported to be in a grey 2012 Mini Cooper sedan driving to the Colorado Springs area.

Victim Found Near Pikes Peak Barr Trail's Golden Stairs Identified

On Sunday, October 28, 2018, at approximately 1:00 PM, deputies responded to an area near Pikes Peak Barr Trail’s Golden Stairs in reference to an unidentified female who was found deceased on the side of the mountain.

The Coroner has identified the victim as Rebecca Maxfield, DOB: 05/22/87.  The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner’s Office once they have received all the information to make a ruling.

Mother Arrested in Connection with Two-Year Old Shooting

On Sunday, October 21, 2018, deputies were dispatched to the 1500 block of Hartford Street in reference to a shooting.  When deputies arrived on scene they were flagged down by the parents of the two-year-old.  The mother had the child in her arms.  Life saving measures were initiated and the child was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff's Office Encourages Halloween Safety

In an effort to make Halloween a safe and enjoyable holiday for all citizens, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office provides the following safety tips:
 
• Children should be supervised or accompanied by an adult at all times.
• Children and adults should wear reflective clothing or a reflective vest.
• Carry a flashlight.
• Do not enter the homes of anyone you do not know.
• Travel in groups and practice the “buddy” system.

Behavioral Health Connect Program (BHCON) Quarterly Statistics

On July 1, 2018, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office launched a five-year grant funded Behavioral Health Connect Program, also known as BHCON (pronounced Beacon).  The program pairs an El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy with a Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician from UCHealth’s Memorial Hospital. The unit responds to emergency calls for service determined to have a behavioral health issue as a primary factor.

Sheriff’s Office Announces Citizens’ Academy Graduation

Sheriff Bill Elder is pleased to announce the graduation of 29 citizens from the Sheriff’s Office Fall Citizens’ Academy Class 2018-2.  The citizens completed a seven-week academy that offered participants a unique insight into the various functions of the Sheriff’s Office.  Topics included criminal investigations, officer safety, jail operations and emergency services.

Suspect Arrested in Felony Menacing Case Involving Road Construction Crew

On October 20, 2018, at approximately 4:02 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 4200 block of Outpost Road regarding a menacing. Upon arrival, deputies learned a road construction crew was working on the road when a male, who was later identified as Edward Otis, Jr. DOB 3/6/63, came out and confronted them.

Sheriff’s Office Asks for Assistance Identifying Suspect in Criminal Trespass Auto and Fraud Case

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at approximately 6:46 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a criminal trespass auto in the 6300 block of Zermatt Drive in unincorporated El Paso County.  The suspect entered the unlocked vehicle and stole a wallet with the victim’s debit card inside of it.  Two unauthorized transactions were made by the suspect using the victim’s debit card at a Kum N Go gas station.

Sheriff’s Office Hosts Community Outreach Events in the Security and Widefield Community
