Sheriff’s Office Announces Graduation Ceremony for 19-2 Detentions Academy

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the graduation ceremony for 16 deputies who have successfully completed the 19-2 Detentions Academy.  The graduation ceremony will be held today, August 16, 2019, 3:00 PM, at Village Seven Presbyterian Church, 4040 Nonchalant Circle South.  

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Three Suspects for Robbery at Falcon Walmart

On Monday, August 12, 2019, at approximately 8:41 PM, deputies were dispatched to a report of a robbery at the 
Walmart, located at 11550 Meridian Market View.  Upon arrival, they learned that three male suspects assaulted an employee while stealing 23 iPhones valued at approximately $23,000.

On Saturday, August 3, 2019 , the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office assumed the investigation into an officer involved shooting by the Colorado Springs Police Department.   In accordance with Senate Bill 15-219, the Sheriff’s Office operates as an independent investigative agency to provide a fair and impartial examination of the facts as it relates to Peace Officer Involved Incidents.

The Fall Citizens’ Academy will begin on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and will be held on Tuesday evenings, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  The Academy will be conducted over a seven-week period, culminating in a graduation ceremony on October 29, 2019

On Tuesday, August 6, 2019, neighborhoods throughout El Paso County are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.  The event’s recurring theme is: “Give neighborhood crime and drugs a going away party.”

Sheriff's Office Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in the 2400 Block of East Fountain Blvd

On Saturday, August 3, 2019, at approximately 6:45 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to a report of a personal robbery in the 2400 block of East Fountain Blvd.  Upon arrival, officers interviewed the victim who identified two suspects. Officers contacted the suspects and during the encounter, one suspect reached for a firearm.  At least one officer fired a shot at the suspect.

On July 31, 2019 at approximately 4:28 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of Shining Star Drive in reference to a domestic disturbance. When deputies arrived on scene, they found a deceased male. 
 
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Daniel Hunt.  We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Hunt. 

Law Enforcement Seizes 300 Marijuana Plants and Arrests Two in Connection to Illegal Marijuana Grow

On July 31, 2019, at approximately 8:00 AM, law enforcement executed search warrants on two properties in the 20000 block of Deputy Point and a knock and talk on a third property regarding illegal marijuana cultivation.  There were approximately 300 marijuana plants, four firearms and nine emaciated and neglected dogs seized from the three properties. The Humane Society took possession of all animals.

On July 31, 2019 at approximately 4:28 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of Shining Star Drive in reference to a domestic disturbance. When deputies arrived on scene, they found a deceased male. Detectives were notified and responded to interview witnesses and process the scene. 
 
Daniel Gray, DOB: 06/12/79 was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on the charge of 2nd Degree Murder. 
 

Sheriff's Office Looking for Assistance in Identifying Burglary Suspects

On July 27, 2019, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call regarding a burglary at Potestio Brothers Equipment, located at 7380 Space Village Avenue. When deputies arrived on scene, they learned employees of the business noticed a lock for one of the gates on the property had been cut, and the gate was open.

Behavioral Health Connect Program (BHCON) First Year in Service Statistics

A year ago, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), UCHealth and El Paso County Public Health to launch a five-year grant funded Behavioral Health Connect Program, also known as BHCON. The program paired an El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy with a Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician from UCHealth to provide a coordinated response to mental health related calls for service in El Paso County. 

Sheriff’s Office Asking for Assistance in Locating Suspect Wanted on Outstanding Warrants

On Thursday, July 25, 2019, at approximately 9:45 PM, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a gray Nissan truck, near the intersection of Main Street and Hancock Expressway.  The driver failed to yield and accelerated at a high rate of speed.  The deputy did not pursue the vehicle.  A short time late, the vehicle was found abandoned and unoccupied on Cresta Loma Circle.

Sheriff's Office Reminds the Community to be Aware of Phone Scams

The Sheriff's Office has received a report of another phone scam. The caller is advising victims that owe fees and/or fines and need to remedy this by purchasing gift cards in the amount of the fines.  In some instances, these "fines" have been in excess of $500,000.  If the victim puts up any kind of argument or asks any questions, the caller will put the victim on hold, and then a male voice will come back on the line claiming to be Sheriff Bill Elder.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Workforce Outfitted with New Tasers

Starting this month, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will issue the new model TASER 7 to selected sworn members and County Security Officers.  With the discontinuation of the previously issued Taser X26, Sheriff Elder and his staff have made the decision to change to the newest model.  The TASER 7 offers improved technology and usability that gives our workforce an upgraded tool to de-escalate dangerous situations safely. 

Sheriff's Office Warns of Scam Targeting Registered Sex Offenders

The Sheriff's Office has received intelligence of another phone scam, targeting registered sex offenders.  The caller claims to be with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and is advising offenders they have active warrant, failed to register or are non-compliant.  The offender is instructed they need to buy a Google card or turn themselves in.

Sheriff’s Office Asking for Public’s Assistance in Identifying Theft Suspect

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft that occurred on June 14, 2019, between 4:15 PM – 4:30 PM, in the 9100 Block of Kings Heath Road.  A suspect is observed on the victim’s Ring video walking up to the front porch, pretend to ring the doorbell, and then leave. It was during this timeframe that a large 6-foot by 3-foot locking brown box filled with boating and fishing supplies was stolen from the victim’s driveway.

In May, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with regional Public Safety partners launched a Targeted Traffic Enforcement Initiative across El Paso County.  This initiative was in response to the number of traffic fatalities in the last two years.

In-Custody Death at the El Paso County Jail

On June 27, 2019, at approximately 4:00 AM, a 57-year-old male in custody at the El Paso County Jail had a medical episode.  He was transported to the medical section for evaluation when his behavior became erratic and then self-harming. Deputies restrained the inmate in an attempt to reduce injuries to the male, where he then became unresponsive.

The Sheriff’s Office monthly statistics reflect the ongoing work that is being done to stop the diversion of legal marijuana to the illegal marijuana market, address the mental health needs of the community and reduce the impact the jail population is having on inmate assaults on staff and other inmates.

On Tuesday June 4, 2019, at approximately 12:05 PM, a medical emergency was declared in a female housing ward at the El Paso County Jail.  

Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Stabbing

On June 4, 2019, at approximately 11:00 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Chatfield Drive in reference to a stabbing.

Upon arrival, deputies located the victim in the backyard of the residence in a shed converted into a tiny home.  The victim had multiple stab wounds which were non-life threatening.  He was treated and then transported to a local hospital for observation.

On Saturday, June 1, 2019, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Springs Police Department, in our continued partnership with the Special Olympics, will join forces for the Annual El Paso County Law Enforcement Torch Run.  This event helps raise money and awareness for Special Olympic Athletes.  There will be athletes participating in the run, horses leading the run, and tons of fun.
