Fireworks Ban Rescinded for Unincorporated El Paso County

Effective immediately, the fireworks ban has been rescinded for unincorporated El Paso County. Our county has various topographical features where some terrain may experience large amounts of moisture, but other portions remain dry and may have a higher risk of fire, but at this time does not warrant going into fire restrictions.

Many of the Fire Districts in El Paso County request you remain extremely cautious with the use of any flame producing device and/or fire. 

Local Daycare Provider Arrested in Infant's Death

On February 5, 2021, at approximately 11:37 AM, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call regarding an unresponsive infant at an address in the 500 block of Widefield Drive in unincorporated El Paso County.  Operating at this address was an in-home daycare for numerous children ranging in ages from 3 months to 7 years old.  The facility was operated by a Dana McNair, DOB: 10/2/67.

Sheriff's Office Makes Two Arrests in 2020 Homicide

On Monday, January 6, 2020 at approximately 2:20 AM, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call regarding an unresponsive female in a room at the Travel Lodge in the 6800 block of Space Village Avenue.

When deputies arrived on scene medical personnel were already there and the female victim was pronounced deceased.  

Victim in Security House Fire Identified

On May 17, 2021, at approximately 2:31 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of Cypress Drive located in Security, Colorado. Deputies and the Security Fire Department responded, but the home was a total loss.

Mother Arrested in Death of Newborn

On January 23, 2021, at approximately 1:23 PM, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive newborn.  The reporting party stated the newborn was lying partially buried in her yard. 

Deputies and medical personnel arrived on scene and confirmed the newborn infant was deceased.  

Deputy Involved in Officer Involved Shooting at Willow Springs Ponds Identified

On Monday, May 24, 2021, at approximately 3:30 PM, Fountain Police Department (FPD) officers and a deputy from the El Paso County Sherriff’s Office (EPSO), came in contact with an armed individual at the Willow Springs Ponds in Fountain, Colorado 80817. The park was evacuated and containment was set up.

It's also traditionally the weekend that kicks off fun and sun season as many schools are dismissed for the year. Unfortunately, it also marks one of the more dangerous weekends for fatal vehicle accidents, especially those related to impaired driving.

Sheriff's Office Identifies Victim in Homicide

On May 12, 2021, at approximately 6:04 PM, our Communications Center dispatched deputies to the 6000 block of South Johnson Road located in Rush, Colorado, on a Check the Welfare call.

Upon arriving on scene, deputies discovered a deceased adult male on the property.

The victim has been identified as 43 year old Donaciano Amaya. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Amaya.

On May 12, 2021, at approximately 6:04 PM, our Communications Center dispatched deputies to the 6000 block of South Johnson Road located in Rush, Colorado, on a Check the Welfare call.

Upon arriving on scene, deputies discovered a deceased adult male on the property. 

The name of the victim will not be released at this time pending identification by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin.

Suspect in B Street Stabbing Identified

On May 9, 2021, at approximately 9:27 PM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call about a stabbing in the 2000 block of B Street. 

When deputies arrived on scene they located an adult male with a stab wound.  The victim was treated on scene, transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive his injury. 

Medical Emergency Results in Inmate's Death

On May 9, 2021, at approximately 12:49AM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail.  

A male was found in his cell unresponsive and not breathing.  Life saving measures were immediately started and continued until AMR and Fire personnel arrived and took over. 

Life saving measures were unsuccessful and the inmate passed away. At this point there is no indication the death is related to COVID-19.

On March 15, 2021, at approximately 1:35 PM, our Communications Center dispatched deputies to the intersection of Old Pueblo Road and Midway Ranch Road on a report of a body found.

Upon arriving on scene, deputies discovered a deceased adult female. The victim was identified as Alison Cantrell, 33. We again would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Ms. Cantrell.

The Sheriff's Office will be unveiling a DUI themed “Heat is On Vehicle”, a wrapped patrol car, on Thursday April 15, 2021, at 1:00 PM, on top of the El Paso County parking garage (located at 50 E. Costilla Street). We are doing this as an effort to enforce and educate on the ever-growing issue of DUI(s) and DUI fatalities.

On Friday, April 9, 2021, at approximately 5:30 PM, our Communications Center received a report of a runaway. 

Joseph Pickering is described as a 14 year-old white male who is 5’5” tall and weighs approximately 96 lbs., has blonde hair and green eyes.  Joseph has a scar on his left arm. He was last wearing a white Nike hooded sweatshirt, with the logo "Just Do it", blue jeans, and red Nike shoes.

Sexual Exploitation of a Child Suspect Arrested, Seeking Potential Victims

In January of 2021, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office initiated a criminal investigation into numerous reports of illegal activity associated to house parties in the Colorado Springs area. During the on-going investigation, the suspect, 21-year-old Caleb Anderson (DOB: 07/29/1999) was found with multiple images and videos of child pornography.

On April 6, 2021, Anderson was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on Sexual Exploitation of a Child and Identity Theft.

Sheriff's Office Investigating Officer Involved Shooting at Chelton Road and Delta Drive

On April 5, 2021, at approximately 12:20 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department Communications center dispatched officers to an armed robbery that was occurring at a convenience store located in the 3000 block of West Colorado Avenue. It was reported there were multiple suspects that fled the scene in a silver Toyota 4-Runner.

Barricaded Suspect Taken into Custody on Cree Drive

On April 2, 2021, at 1:52 PM, deputies were attempting to locate a suspect in the 1100 block of Cree Drive. 

Deputies identified the suspect, who was wanted on a felony warrant, inside a home. The suspect did not comply with deputies but instead, barricaded inside the home. 

The Tactical Support Unit arrived on scene to attempt to gain compliance from the suspect. 

Inmate Identified in Suicide at the El Paso County Jail

On Monday, March 29, 2021, at approximately 5:54 PM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail. 

A male inmate was found in his cell attempting suicide by hanging. When additional deputies responded to the ward, the inmate was not breathing and had no pulse. The deputies initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and used the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) with the assistance of responding medical staff.

Arrest Made in Sexual Assault Case

Arrest Made in Sexual Assault Case

On March 18, 2021, one of our School Resource Officers received information of an alleged sexual assault. The victim was able to name the suspect.  

The investigation involved allegations of sexual assault on an 18-year-old female victim by Russel Shafer (DOB:06/25/1984) who is a volunteer Firefighter with the Hanover Fire Department, and has been placed on suspension.
