May 2019 Statistics for Illegal Marijuana Enforcement, Behavioral Health Program and Jail Population

The Sheriff’s Office monthly statistics reflect the ongoing work that is being done to stop the diversion of legal marijuana to the illegal marijuana market, address the mental health needs of the community and reduce the impact the jail population is having on inmate assaults on staff and other inmates.

Suicide at El Paso County Jail

On Tuesday June 4, 2019, at approximately 12:05 PM, a medical emergency was declared in a female housing ward at the El Paso County Jail.  

Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Stabbing

On June 4, 2019, at approximately 11:00 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Chatfield Drive in reference to a stabbing.

Upon arrival, deputies located the victim in the backyard of the residence in a shed converted into a tiny home.  The victim had multiple stab wounds which were non-life threatening.  He was treated and then transported to a local hospital for observation.

Sheriff's Office and Colorado Springs Police Department Support Special Olympics in Annual Torch Run

On Saturday, June 1, 2019, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Springs Police Department, in our continued partnership with the Special Olympics, will join forces for the Annual El Paso County Law Enforcement Torch Run.  This event helps raise money and awareness for Special Olympic Athletes.  There will be athletes participating in the run, horses leading the run, and tons of fun.

Suspect Identified in Officer Involved Shooting on Forest Hill Road

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, at approximately 5:30 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a domestic disturbance at an address in the 4200 block of Forest Hill Road.  A male suspect barricaded himself inside the residence.   The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) was activated and responded to the scene.  During the incident, the suspect fired at officers, and at least one officer returned fire.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at 9:15 AM, deputies with the Rural Enforcement Outreach Unit (REO) executed a search warrant in the 5800 block of Hoss Point in reference to an on-going animal neglect investigation.

Sheriff's Office Investigates Officer Involved Shooting on Forest Hill Road

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, at approximately 5:30 PM, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a domestic disturbance at an address in the 4200 block of Forest Hill Road.  A male party barricaded himself inside the residence.   The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) was activated and responded to the scene.  During the incident, multiple shots were fired.   
 

Sheriff's Office Releases Annual DUI Statistics

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has been working to increase enforcement of impaired drivers, as El Paso County is leading the state in impaired driver traffic related fatalities.  As part of our ongoing efforts, we are one of many agencies who participate in the High Visibility Enforcement Grant. 

As a part of the grant process, we have been tracking DUI arrests from April 1st of the prior year, to March 31st of the given year.

Sheriff’s Office Announces Graduation Ceremony for 19-1 Detentions Academy

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the graduation ceremony for 18 deputies who have successfully completed the 19-1 Detentions Academy.  The graduation ceremony will be held today, May 10, 3:00 PM, at Village Seven Presbyterian Church, 4040 Nonchalant Circle South. 

Suspect in Attempted Murder Case Taken into Custody

On May 1, 2019, 8:14 PM, deputies responded to 3000 block of West Colorado Avenue in reference to reports of shots fired.  According to witnesses on scene the suspect fired approximately 5-6 shots at the victim while he was sitting in his vehicle.

The suspect fled on foot towards Midland Trail and was seen entering the lobby of the Travel Lodge Motel located in the 2600 block of Ore Mill Road.  Containment was set up and deputies searched the motel yielding negative results.

Sheriff's Office Offering Reward for Information Leading to Arrest for Vandalism of SMART Trailer

On May 2, 2019, the EPSO SMART Trailer was deployed near Highway 83 and Northgate Boulevard as a part of our Targeted Traffic Enforcement.  Upon returning to the location on May 7, 2019, it was discovered the trailer had been vandalized and significantly damaged.  The extent of the damages incurred are as follows:

In the month of April, the Sheriff’s Office Rural Enforcement and Outreach Unit (REO), SWAT and Metro Vice and Narcotics and Intelligence (MVINI) executed a search warrant in one of the largest illegal marijuana cultivations operations in El Paso County.  Investigators seized 758 illegal marijuana plants.

Law Enforcement Launches Targeted Traffic Enforcement Initiative

El Paso County has led Colorado in the number of reported traffic deaths in the last two years, seventy-seven in 2017 and eighty-one in 2018.  Beginning on May 1, 2019, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with our regional Public Safety partners will increase traffic enforcement efforts across El Paso County.

Investigative Update to Officer Involved Shooting on Hancock Expressway

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at approximately 4:27 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 2500 block of Hancock Expressway.  Upon arrival, officers observed smoke coming from the suspects apartment.

The investigation has revealed when officers contacted the suspect he brandished a weapon and began moving towards the officers and shots were fired.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Volunteer Program is comprised of a group of citizens with a true and common desire to partner with the Sheriff's Office to help provide public safety services to the community. In 2018, a total of 448 dedicated volunteers contributed 74,094 hours of service worth over two million dollars.

Every year the Sheriff's Office recognizes a volunteer and a volunteer unit for their commitment to the Sheriff's Office Mission. 

Arrest Warrants Issued in Animal Cruelty Case

On March 10, 2019 at approximately 2:30 PM, a deputy from the Rural Enforcement Outreach Team was contacted by multiple parties in reference to an animal neglect complaint in the 3200 block of Slocum Road and a search warrant was obtained for the property.

Investigative Update on Officer Involved Shooting on Longfellow Drive

On Monday April 15, 2019, at approximately 10:15 AM, units from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD)  responded to the 300 block of Longfellow Drive in response to an automobile theft in-progress/recovery.  A foot chase ensued, and a male was taken into custody related to the theft.

On April 9, 2019, approximately 9:00 AM, members of the Sheriff’s Office Rural Enforcement and Outreach Unit (REO), SWAT, and Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence (MVNI) executed a search warrant at an address in the 13000 Block of North Ellicott Hwy in reference to an ongoing marijuana cultivation investigation.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Knox has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest was sponsored by Paula Rayer of Peyton, Colorado in memory of her mother, Lynn D. Rayer and embroidered with the sentiment "This gift of protection provided by Lynn D. Rayer."

Three Juveniles Arrested For Attempted First Degree Burglary

On Monday, April 1, 2019, at approximately 4:21 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a male juvenile, wearing a black bandana around his face and a gun in his hand, attempt to break into a residence in the 2000 Block of Rocklin Dr.  The male checked to see if the door was locked, heard the dog barking, and then left on foot with two other individuals who were waiting by the street.  This incident was captured on the home’s security system.

Male and Female Found Deceased Inside Residence Identified

On March 25, 2019, at approximately 6:30 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 35800 Block of Wagner Lane in reference to a report of a male and three dogs found deceased inside the residence. Upon arriving on scene, deputies located a male, female and three dogs deceased throughout the home.

Undersheriff Joseph Breister Retires After 32 Years of Dedicated Service

Undersheriff Joseph Breister is retiring after 32 years of dedicated service to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.  He began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in January 1987 as the first out-of-state lateral transfer in patrol.  During his career, he served in numerous assignments including Patrol, Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence, Internal Affairs, Investigations and Training. 

Inmate in El Paso County Jail Test Positive for Hepatitis A

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, at approximately 2:15 PM, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by jail medical staff that an inmate tested positive for Hepatitis A.  The inmate is currently incarcerated in the El Paso County Jail and has been since January 16, 2019.   

We are working closely with El Paso County Public Health to vaccinate all inmates who may have come in contact with the infected inmate and need to be vaccinated. The inmate has also been placed in quarantine.

Sheriff's Office Make Arrest in Overnight Pursuit

On March 21, 2019, at approximately 2:15 AM, a deputy observed a light-colored Audi pull out of the Springs Value Inn.  The vehicle was driving erratically so the deputy ran the plate and it came back to a black Audi.  A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver pulled over on Marksheffel Road southbound south of Space Village Drive.  The driver was unable to provide identification and exhibited signs of impairment.
