Man Charged with Attempted Homicide of a Peace Officer After Barricade on Front Street

On May 17, 2025, at approximately 5:22 PM, the Monument Police Department responded to a reported family disturbance at a residence located at 42 Front Street in the Town of Monument, Colorado. Due to prior incidents involving the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Miguel Borja, and concerning behavior during the ongoing disturbance, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist.

During the incident, Borja allegedly attempted to ignite another individual on fire. Responding officers quickly evacuated the residence. Borja then barricaded himself inside the residence. While attempting to communicate with Borja, officers detected the strong odor of gas inside the residence.

As officers and deputies attempted entry into part of the residence, an explosion occurred, which is believed to have been intentionally caused by Borja. At the time of the explosion, two officers and three deputies were inside the home. All five were transported to area hospitals and later released.

Miguel Borja was taken into custody at the scene and ultimately transported by medical personnel to a Denver area hospital for treatment of burn-related injuries.

Detectives from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Additionally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Colorado Springs Police Department Regional Explosives Unit, and the Metro Crime Lab are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Miguel Borja is charged with the following offenses:

  • One count of Attempted First-Degree Assault
  • One count of First-Degree Arson
  • Three counts of Attempted Homicide
  • Five counts of Attempted Homicide of a Peace Officer

“I am incredibly thankful members of law enforcement were not seriously injured during this incident,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “Criminals like Borja do not belong in our communities, and I am grateful he is in the custody of my deputies.

“Thank you to our collaborating partners, at the local and federal levels, for assisting us in this investigation and ensuring justice for everyone harmed by this troubling act of violence.”

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
