On November 19, 2021, just prior to 6:00 AM, a resident in the 5000 block of South Highway 85/87 called 911 to report a man was at the front door bleeding heavily. When deputies arrived on scene, they located an adult man with a gunshot wound to his face.
Medical personnel were summoned to the scene and subsequently transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. His condition is not known at this time. Prior to being transported, deputies were able to determine the man was likely shot in the area of Coventry Drive and South Academy Boulevard which is in an unincorporated portion of El Paso County.
Deputies immediately responded to that area and located evidence to corroborate the information the victim gave them. As such, El Paso County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes detectives responded and have taken over the investigation. They continue to work with our Patrol Division deputies to process the scene and work through the evidence to include developing suspect information.
Northbound South Academy Boulevard was blocked at Hartford Street for quite some time to preserve the scene but has since been reopened to one lane. There is not an anticipated time frame for the roadway to be completely reopened.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the officers of the Fountain Police Department and troopers with the Colorado State Patrol for their assistance in the overall response to this incident.
We ask that if you were in the area of South Academy Boulevard and Coventry Drive today between the hours of approximately 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM and believe you may have witnessed activity related to this incident, please call the Sheriff's Office Investigations Tip Line at 719-520-6666.
