Suspect Identified in Officer Use of Force on Ashgrove Street

May 28, 2020 - 3:12am

On May 24, 2020, at approximately 9:55 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department Communications Center dispatched officers to a Weapons Display call for service in the 2700 block of Ashgrove Street.

Upon arrival, the officers contacted the reporting party who explained there was a disturbance between neighbors and the suspect.

Officers made contact with the suspect and spoke with him briefly. The officers attempted to effect an arrest on the suspect when he began to resist. A physical altercation ensued. During the altercation at least one use of a Taser was deployed by an officer. The use of the Taser appeared to be ineffective and the suspect continued to struggle with the officers. The officers were able to gain control of the situation and controlled the suspect in order to take him into custody. At this time the suspect became limp. The officers immediately began C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on the suspect until medical personnel arrived on scene. The suspect was unresponsive and passed away on scene.

The suspect has been identified as Chad Burnett, age 49. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office.

The five officers involved are uninjured and have been placed on administrative leave.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer involved use of force. This is an ongoing investigation and all updates will only be provided by the Sheriff's Office Public Information Office.
