Feb 6, 2024 - 3:30pm

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announces a settlement was reached between El Paso County, Colorado, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and the Estate of Dezaree Archuleta.
On June 9, 2022, Ms. Archuleta, an inmate at the El Paso County Jail, was found unresponsive in her cell. Deputies, jail medical staff, responders from American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department attempted lifesaving efforts.  Unfortunately, these efforts were not successful.

Ms. Archuleta died as a result of asphyxiation.
Under the terms of the settlement, the Estate of Ms. Archuleta will receive one million dollars ($1,000,000.00).  El Paso County and Berkley Public Entity/ Gemini Insurance Company, El Paso County's excess insurance carrier, will each pay $500,000.
Cassandra Sebastian, a Public Information Officer for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, issued the following statement:

"The El Paso County Sheriff's Office would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Archuleta.  It is our hope this settlement allows the family to further heal from this loss.”

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office will have no further comment on this settlement.
