Sheriff's Office Warns of Phone Scam-Using Sheriff's Office Number

Jun 20, 2016 - 12:48pm

The Sheriff's Office has received intelligence of another scam.  In these new cases the caller is asking for money for unpaid school tuition or back taxes using the Sheriff’s Office phone number 719-390-2000.  The caller threatens an arrest warrant will be issued if the money owed is not paid.

This can be done by using an application called "Spoof Card".  The application allows the suspect to use any legitimate phone number to call from with intent of victimizing people for large amounts of money.

The information of employee names, as well as phone numbers is easily accessible from the Sheriff's Office Website.  If someone calls you claiming to be an employee with the Sheriff's Office and is asking for money for any reason, please hang up and call your local law enforcement agency.

Again, the Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens that our Office NEVER calls and informs individuals they have an active warrant and NEVER asks individuals to make payments to clear up a warrant.  We will also NEVER call to ask for money, for any reason.  We DO NOT collect money for any government agency.

If you have information about or have fallen victim to this scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
