Sheriff's Office Warns of Phone Scam Using Employee Name

Feb 25, 2020 - 10:53am

The Sheriff's Office has received a report of another phone scam.  The caller threatened if the victim did not purchase gift cards that was valued at one thousand dollars legal action would be taken against them.  In these most recent cases, they are using the name of actual employees of the Sheriff's Office and calling from a number that appears to be from the Sheriff's Office.

We would like to remind the community NOT to give money or personal information over the phone. Our Office will never ask individuals to make payments to remedy fines or to clear warrants.

Scammers use new technology and techniques as they use actual names of employees and can appear to be calling from a legitimate Sheriff’s Office phone number by using an application called “Spoof App.”  This application allows the suspect to use any legitimate phone number to call from with the intent of victimizing people for large amounts of money.

If you feel you have been the victim of this type of scam or if you have information you are encouraged to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555, or the local law enforcement agency in which you reside.
