Sheriff's Office Provides Investigative Update to Officer Involved Shooting

Aug 2, 2018 - 5:35am

At about 2:45 AM Thursday morning, on August 2nd, 2018, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to the 2300 block of East Boulder Street in Colorado Springs in response to a "shots fired" call for service.

Upon arrival in the area, an officer contacted an adult male suspect in the street.  As other officers began to arrive the suspect produced a handgun and shots were exchanged between the suspect and the police.

One officer was gravely wounded, and the suspect sustained a non-life-threatening injury.  The officer and the suspect were both transported to a local hospital where they are being treated.  The officer has been identified as Officer Cem Duzel, a five-year veteran of the Colorado Police Department.

As a result of Senate Bill 15-219, Concerning Measures to Provide Additional Transparency to Peace Officer-Involved Shootings, the Deadly Force Investigations Team (DFIT) lead by El Paso County Sheriff's Office will be investigating the officer involved shooting.  Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301 provides the statutory requirements for these investigations.

Additional information will be released as the investigation allows.

Please keep Officer Duzel, his family and friends and the Colorado Springs Police Department in your thoughts and prayers.
