Sheriff's Office Provides Investigative Update on Donner Pass Fire and Appeals For Information

Mar 4, 2017 - 2:09am

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, at approximately 2:00 PM, a wildland fire was reported behind the Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR) in the area of Donner Pass View and Vigilante View.  Crews from multiple agencies responded to this fire which occurred on private property owned by El Paso County and Colorado Springs Utilities.

Ultimately, about 205 acres were burned and the fire threatened PPIR, Clear Springs Ranch Solar Energy Array and numerous homes on Donner Pass View.  No homes or businesses were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigators responded to conduct the investigation of the fire.  It was determined the fire was started by an individual or individuals shooting at a makeshift shooting range illegally set up on El Paso County property.  The party(s) responsible for the fire fled the scene prior to the arrival of fire or law enforcement units.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit is asking that if anyone has information on any individual(s) that were in this area on Saturday, February 25, to please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind the citizens of El Paso County that this area is private property and is marked with signs stating NO TRESSPASSING.  Anyone found in this area is subject to having trespassing charges filed against them.  Individuals also need to be aware that if they cause a fire while trespassing in this area they will be subject to arson charges as well.
