Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest After Firearm Recovered on School Grounds

Oct 5, 2022 - 12:05pm

On October 4th, just after 9:30am, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Evans Elementary School located at 1675 Winnebago Road in the Cimarron Hills area of unincorporated El Paso County after receiving a report of a student in possession of a firearm.  A handgun was discovered inside his backpack along with ammunition and a magazine.

Following an initial investigation, the student was arrested and booked into the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center under the charge of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, a Class 6 Felony.  This investigation revealed the student said he had not brought the gun to school to engage in violence but simply to show to his friends.  This student will not be identified due to his age.

EPSO personnel continue to follow-up on this incident to determine how the juvenile came into possession of the firearm to begin with.  That investigation is ongoing and there are no updates on its status at this time.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the School District 49 security team and the Evans Elementary School administration for their initial handling of this incident.  We value our excellent working relationship with them and remain committed to the safety of the students and staff who attend all of the various schools and school districts that serve the hundreds of thousands of residents who live in the unincorporated portions of El Paso County.
