Sheriff's Office Investigates Officer Involved Shooting

Aug 15, 2017 - 12:30pm

On Monday, August 14, 2017, at approximately 11:36 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call for service regarding a shoplifter at the Walmart on Platte Avenue in Colorado Springs.  The responding officer encountered the suspect and a foot pursuit ensued.

Several other officers arrived in the 3200 block of Bijou Street and shots were fired.  The suspect succumbed to their injuries on scene.

As a result of Senate Bill 15-219, Concerning Measures to Provide Additional Transparency to Peace Officer-Involved Shootings, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) will be investigating the officer involved shooting.  Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, provides the statutory requirements for these investigations.

The officer involved has been placed on routine paid administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.

We are withholding the suspects identification until the Coroner makes a positive identification and the next of kin is notified.

Once the El Paso County Sheriff's Office completes our investigation into the officer involved shooting, it will be given to the District Attorney’s Office for review. The District Attorney’s Office will then provide their report based on Senate Bill 15-219.

All updates will only be provided by the Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
