Investigative Update to Officer Involved Shooting on Hancock Expressway

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at approximately 4:27 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 2500 block of Hancock Expressway.  Upon arrival, officers observed smoke coming from the suspects apartment.

The investigation has revealed when officers contacted the suspect he brandished a weapon and began moving towards the officers and shots were fired.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and has been identified as Jonathan Patzel, DOB: 8/28/89.  The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office once they have all the information to make a ruling.

The fire was related to this disturbance call and was human caused.

The officers have been placed on routine administrative leave and the names will be released by the Colorado Springs Police Department at a time they feel is appropriate.

This is still an active investigation and all updates will come from the Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
