El Paso County Sheriff's Office Assumes Investigation into Manitou Springs Homicide

On May 9, 2019 at approximately 12:29 AM, Officers with the Manitou Springs Police Department
were dispatched to an assault at 601 Manitou Ave unit #6.  Once on scene, officers found an unconscious male outside of the apartment laying in a kiddie pool full of water. He was unresponsive to both verbal and physical stimulus. Medical personnel arrived and immediately began tending to the injured party. The male was transported to Memorial Central where he succumbed to his injuries.  This incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Freddie Joseph Crespo, DOB 07/02/86, and John Robert Swinehart, DOB 05/10/94, were originally arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on charges of Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder and Assault in the First
degree.  Those charges have been upgraded to First Degree Murder.

The identity of the victim will not be released until positive identification has been made by the Coroner's Office and the next of kin has been notified. 

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office, at the request of the Manitou Springs Police Department, is the lead investigative agency.  We have no reason to believe that there is any threat to the public.  The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact the El Paso County Sheriff"s Office at 719-390-5555.
