Sep 25, 2017 - 10:15am

On September 19, 2017, at approximately 2:44 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a pick-up truck in the Security/ Widefield area. The truck failed to yield to deputies and a short pursuit was initiated. That pursuit was terminated due to high speeds. The driver of the pick-up truck continued his reckless behavior at which time deputies, with the assistance of Fountain Police Department officers, reengaged the pursuit and were able to stop the vehicle in a cul-de-sac where shots were fired, striking the suspect.

No deputies or officers were injured during the shots being fired; however, officers and deputies sustained minor injuries during the pursuits.

Deputy Cesar Talavera was injured when his car was hit.  He has since been released from the hospital.  Deputy Talavera is a four year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and is assigned to the Patrol Division.

The deputy involved in the Officer Involved Shooting was Deputy Cody Jaworski.  He was treated for his injuries and released.  Deputy Jaworski is a five year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and is assigned to the Patrol Division.
