Jul 23, 2021 - 6:10am

On July 22, 2021, at approximately 1700 hours, our Communications Center received a 911 call from a person stating a male was shooting a weapon from the sunroof of his vehicle in the area of Cornell Street and Widefield Boulevard.

Deputies arrived on scene where witnesses in the area stated the suspect pointed the weapon at a person before running into a home in the 100 block of Cornell Street. Preliminary investigation of the incident revealed this may have stemmed from a road rage incident.

Deputies located the suspect identified as Darwin Hilliard, DOB 04/25/85. The suspect refused to comply with orders to exit his home on Cornell Street and instead barricaded inside.

The Tactical Support Unit responded and assumed control of the situation.  Approximately 3 hours later, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

During the search of the home several weapons, body armor, and ammunition were located.

Hilliard has been booked into the El Paso County Jail and charged with the following:

Felony Menacing, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Sexual Assault (3 counts - Failure to Appear Warrant not related to this incident.)

Attached to this media release is a mugshot of Hilliard.
