23rd Annual Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service

May 18, 2016 - 10:55am

On Friday, May 20, 2016, law enforcement agencies and military installations will gather at Memorial Park at 10:00 AM for the 23rd Annual Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service.  The memorial service honors the 31 Pikes Peak Region peace officers who have given their lives in the line of duty since 1895.  This year Officer Garrett Swasey has been added to the Roll Call of Honor.  The keynote speaker for the event is Brian McPike, Chief of Police for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. This week pays special recognition for those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety of others. On average in the United States, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every 57 hours, and more than 20,000 have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The public and media are invited to attend this auspicious ceremony honoring those officers from our Region who have made the ultimate sacrifice.   If you are unable to attend, you can watch a live stream of the service by going to the Sheriff's Office Facebook page at EPC Sheriff's Office.
