El Paso County Jail Inmate Who Died of Medical Emergency Identified

Sep 30, 2021 - 2:35am

On September 25, 2021, at approximately 12:03 AM, a medical emergency was declared in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail.

A man fell to the ground as he was making his way to the bathroom. Deputies and medical staff responded to the ward and helped the inmate sit up at which time he was conscious and breathing. Medical staff members and deputies remained with the inmate.

At approximately 12:29 AM, while waiting for AMR (American Medical Response) to respond, the inmate became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Life saving measures were immediately started and continued until AMR and Fire personnel (Colorado Springs Fire Department) arrived and took over medical care.

Life saving measures were unsuccessful and the inmate passed away. At this point there is no indication the death is related to COVID-19.

The inmate has been identified as Steven Thorne, age 33. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Thorne's family and friends.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will conduct a full autopsy to make an official determination as to the cause of death.

This is an active investigation and all updates and information on this incident will come only from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Public Information Office.
