Chief Clif Northam is currently assigned to the Detentions Bureau. He is a thirty three year law enforcement veteran, beginning his career as a police officer in the Washington, D.C. area in 1982. Chief Northam has been employed with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office since January 1994. He has served in numerous areas within the Sheriff’s Office to include; Patrol, Training Coordinator, Training Academy Instructor, Community Policing/HICOP, FTO, FTO Program Coordinator, Public Information Officer, CJC Floor Security and Court Services Lieutenant. He was designated a Colorado Master Field Training Officer by the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC). He has also instructed courses on Supervision, Biased Based Profiling, Patrol Observation and Cultural Diversity for the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies in the State on behalf of (CSOC). In addition to his duties with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Northam is a trainer for Penn State University's Justice and Safety Institute. In this capacity, he has taught various police related courses such as Leadership Development, Field Training Officer and Organizational Change. These courses have been presented to other law enforcement and detention agencies in the United States, as well as the Trinidad-Tobago Police Services under contract with Penn State.
Outside of his work at the Sheriff’s Office, Chief Northam is a dedicated community member who seeks the good of all the citizens of our community through his involvement in various organizations and committees. He is a member of the El Pomar Emerging Leaders Development Committee, the Colorado Springs Black Advisory Council, the Colorado Springs Branch NAACP, The Fourth Judicial District Mental Health Court, and the State Legislative Mental Illness/Criminal Justice Task Force. He is also a member of the board of Kid Power - Colorado and a graduate of the 2006 class of the Center for Creative Leadership's Community Leadership Program.
Chief Northam has recently graduated from the FBI National Academy – Session 258.
